As of January 2024, the Real-Time Interface (RTI) has become mandatory for new wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems in the Netherlands with grid connections between 1 and 50 MW. This innovative framework allows real-time communication between energy producers and grid operators, serving as an “emergency stop” mechanism to limit power output during periods of grid congestion when all other measures have been exhausted.
At Spectral, we’re proud to announce that our STELLAR Gateway is officially certified for RTI by the independent authority DNV, making it one of the few devices capable of meeting this critical requirement. The RTI works via an on-site device (DSO Endpoint) supplied by the grid operator, which connects to the STELLAR Gateway through a dedicated Ethernet cable. If activated, the RTI curtails energy production temporarily, with compensation provided separately, in line with contractual agreements. Importantly, the RTI does not interfere with optimal control or trading strategies under normal operation.
But RTI compliance is just the beginning. STELLAR’s Energy Control platform seamlessly combines RTI functionality with advanced energy management capabilities, including delivering ancillary services like aFRR and FCR. Asset owners can stack multiple energy services, optimizing distributed energy resources like batteries and renewable systems.
