Challenge
In 2019, Greenchoice already installed a stationary 10 megawatt-hour battery at the Hartel II wind farm to contribute to a stable and sustainable energy system in the Netherlands. This wind farm has a yearly production capacity of 68 GWh and generates sufficient energy for 27,500 households in the Netherlands. The Hellegatsplein wind farm represents an annual production capacity of 41.5 GWh of sustainable energy – the equivalent of 16,500 household’s annual energy consumption. The Hellegatsplein wind farm consists of four Alstom Power 110 wind turbines, with a total capacity of 12MW. The ten Greener Power Solutions mobile batteries each have an energy storage capacity of 336 KWh. The Greener mobile batteries must be installed and removed when necessary based on the requirements of the Hellegatsplein wind farm.
Approach
This is a STELLAR project. The charging zone at Hellegatsplein will accommodate ten Greener mobile batteries, which can store 336kWh each. The batteries will be charged directly from the wind turbines, and the integration with the Spectral Smart Energy Control System will control, automate and optimize various events, making operation more sustainable, and achieving flexibility on the Dutch national electricity grid. As the batteries are completely mobile, they can be relocated and (re)installed based on site requirements, ensuring a new level of flexibility.
Outcome
Spectral’s Smart Energy Control System, which when integrated with Greener batteries, will provide realtime insights into battery performance, automate distribution FCR capacity, and automate messaging to Tennet. Spectral then steers battery and wind farm production with energy market requirements, keeping levels within set points, supports imbalance trading, and automate grid connection import/export contractual compliance.
