Sustainable Batteries for Grid Congestion and Energy Poverty

In this innovation project Spectral and United Battery will jointly realize a solution with innovative  carbon silicon lead batteries within residential complexes to anticipate grid congestion problems in the Utrecht region and maximize revenues on the balancing and wholesale markets. This is a STELLAR project.

The project is co-financed by the Kansen voor West 3 (EFRO) under subsidy number KVW3-00173

Challenge

Until recently, electricity on the grid was demand-driven, with fossil fuels used to meet the need. Now, electricity is increasingly produced by renewables when available, but demand still does not align with supply, causing imbalance pricing and congestion issues, particularly due to location and timing mismatches. There is heavy investment in solar and wind energy in sparsely populated areas, while electricity demand rises in densely populated regions. This has led to concerns about grid overload, especially in Utrecht, limiting transport capacity for new or expanding residential and commercial consumers. Congestion, or “grid congestion,” is a growing issue, causing inefficiencies and higher costs for energy companies and consumers.

Approach

The developed pool of residential complex batteries will be controlled via a central virtual power plant data platform and will be able to generate additional income on the energy and balancing markets. Spectral will further develop its software and control algorithms, focusing on combining management of local grid congestion while optimizing balancing and energy market services.
